Welcome to issue number 33 of the FIDIC CEO’s Update, my regular round-up of the latest FIDIC activities, initiatives, and events, and the second update of the new year, 2023.
Like everyone around the world, FIDIC was deeply saddened by the events in Turkey and northern Syria where earthquakes have now claimed more than 40,000 lives, with the death toll expected to rise further. Our hearts and thoughts are with all those in Turkey and Syria affected by these devastating events and we send our deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones. In the immediate aftermath of the earthquakes, FIDIC sent its solidarity and support to our local member association in the region, the Association of Turkish Consulting Engineers and Architects (ATCEA).
Currently, we understand that they have not been directly affected by the disaster, but FIDIC will continue to stand by to offer whatever support we can at this difficult time. As always with such tragedies, we have seen the international community respond well, with many countries and NGOs pledging material and monetary support to Turkey and northern Syria. More assistance will be needed in the future as the region looks to recover from the disaster. I am confident that the international engineering, construction, and infrastructure community, including the humanitarian relief organisations Red Crescent, RedR International and others, will also offer their assistance when the time comes
